Sanitation FAQ’s
"DO"
- Mark the location of the pump out access cover if below grade to ease access should it need pumped out in the winter months.
- Have your septic system cleaned by a PSMA pumper a minimum of once every three years. Advanced systems may require more frequent servicing.
- Make sure the septic tank is only pumped; through the main clean-out manhole in order to get a thorough cleaning
- Keep records of regular cleanings and maintenance.
- Consider installing an effluent filter in the septic tank to help preserve the life of the absorption area.
- Exercise water conservation. Upgrade old fixtures and appliances to water conserving models.
- Spread out laundry days to not overburden the septic system with high volumes in one day.
- Minimize or discontinue use of garbage disposals on septic systems.
- Use as many bio-degradable products as possible.
"DO NOT"
- Flush any semi or non-degradable items into the septic tank; including coffee grounds, cooking fats, paper towels, wet towels or wipes, facial tissue, cigarette butts, rags, disposable diapers, feminine hygiene products, etc.
- Flush or dispose of any medicines, especially antibiotics or chemotherapy.
- Flush or use large amounts of chlorine bleach or lye products.
- Use chlorine tablets or dispensers in toilet tank or bowl.
- Connect roof drains, downspouts, condensate lines, sump pumps, humidifiers or de-humidifiers to the septic system.
- Plant shrubs or trees near the absorption area of the septic system.
- Irrigate over top of the absorption area.
- Drive vehicles, construction equipment, or place heavy objects over the septic system.
- Build anything above or cover the absorption area with any hard surface such as concrete or asphalt.
- Wash or rinse any latex/oil based paint products or spackling tools at household fixtures.
- Turn off alarms, pumps, aerators or other equipment for more advanced type septic systems.
